The Wanaka Bothy

 

Established in 2014 and taken over by the Broons (Brown Family) in 2019 this was originally the Flying Kiwi Backpackers. The complex was originally home to Dr Dennis Pezaro of the Wanaka Medical Center and was an important location for the health and well being of residents in Wanaka over may years. Lookout for "Pezaro" corner as you head up Cardies.

 

The Wanaka Backpackers Bothy is a family-owned and locally-operated business with a love for the outdoors, adventure and travel. The Broons family are well-traveled and spend as much time as possible in the outdoors skiing, mountain biking, windsurfing, tramping and planning adventures. The Wanaka Backpackers Bothy aims to provide affordable accommodation that feels like home and is a safe environment to allow you to enjoy your stay in and let Wanaka "find" you.

 

We are a customer-focused team and pride ourselves in providing a laid-back Wanaka experience mixed with good, Scottish hospitality. At the Bothy you will receive a warm welcome and find everything you need for a great stay in Wanaka, whether you want a relaxed few days on a couch or an adventure-packed week of adrenaline activities; Wanaka Backpackers Bothy focuses on providing you with the base to explore, share and enjoy your time in Wanaka.

Freedom Hub Day Guest

We have a day guest option for Freedom Campers and travelers who do not have access to facilities normally. For a small charge, you can access the facilities including:

​

  • Unlimited Wifi

  • Laundry, Kitchen, and bathroom facilities all available

  • Full lounge access includes movies and television

  • Maps and local knowledge of activities and hikes

​

The Freedom Hub day guest system is available from 1130 and closes at 1700 to allow cleaning and the overnight guests the space to use the facilities. At times the Day Guest option may not be available due to numbers and fire regulations that we must comply with. If you decide to book in for the evening the Day guest fee will be deducted from your total bill.

What is a Bothy?

A Bothy is a mountain shelter designed to provide a safe and secure shelter for people enjoying the environment they are in. They are all over Scotland and similar to unserviced DOC huts.
